People were really excited for the follow-up to Doctor Strange 2, especially after the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Thanks to director Sam Raimi coming back to superhero movies and lots of possible character appearances, Multiverse of Madness had the 11th best opening weekend ever.
But Marvel’s smart Wizard doesn’t always have an easy time. The plot can seem a bit silly at times, as noted by The Direct, and some may feel disappointed due to the lack of in-depth exploration. Doctor Strange 2 got a B+ CinemaScore and a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (not certified fresh).
On Friday, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a Marvel Studios movie, made $16.7 million, which is 81% less than its $90.7 million opening day earnings. This marks the second-lowest second Friday release for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The movie is expected to see a 65-69% drop in audience for its second weekend, bringing in $60-$65 million.
Spider-Man: No Way Home had a huge 83.9% drop on the second Friday in December, but it was Christmas Eve. Since Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man movie is the third-highest-grossing domestic film ever, the drop on Friday didn’t seem to affect its overall success much.
Captain America: Civil War made $408 million at the box office in the United States. The third movie led by Chris Evans also got an A CinemaScore and a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Multiverse of Madness didn’t meet expectations, which might affect its long-term performance, but it could still make a good profit. If things go well, the total earnings in the U.S. for Multiverse of Madness might end up between $395 million and $405 million.
If it reaches any of these goals, it will become the 10th highest-earning MCU movie in North America. Achieving this is quite possible, especially after it had the seventh-highest opening weekend in Marvel Studios history.
